12:45 - 2 pm - Tara Pool - Queen Elizabeth I, Director of Vox Nobili

"Dressing the Part - Clothing and Costume in Shakespeare's Time"
Queen Elizabeth I

Dressing a Shakespeare production nowadays is an enterprise limited only by the imagination of the costume crew (and their budget,) and San Diego has seen Will’s plays set in everything from ‘traditional Elizabethan’ to minimalist modern black & white, from Beatlemania styles to South American guerilla fatigues, and nearly everything in between. But how would the Playwright himself have dressed his own actors?

In the 4th lecture of the “Speaking of Shakespeare” series, we take you through a bit of clothing history, and look at how Shakespeare’s contemporaries on the stage would have dressed for their roles. There will be hands-on examples of several of the sort of costumes one would see in the time period, and an exploration of some of Will’s own textual directions to the Costume Mistress.

Tara J. Pool is also an award-winning costumer, actress, singer and director, who has been creating period costumes/clothing for stage and historical re-enactment for over fifteen years.

Other upcoming speakers

Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010 - Scott Paulson

Scott Paulson lectures on the sound effects in Shakespeare's plays and reveals the secrets of how the actual effects were made at the Shakespearean Globe in 1600. Scott takes us beyond the live theatre stage, revealing anecdotes and practices of Shakespearean productions at radio and film sound stages. That day, we'll provide an impromptu sound score for a 1906 Shakespeare silent film and a 1940 Shakespeare radio play!

Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010 - Raymond and Patricia Lynch
